(US Premier) A cinematic portrait of Duane Michals, one of America’s masters of photography, who revolutionized the art form and paved the way for other artists who followed. Duane Michals is a witty and cheerful young man of almost 80 years old and, most of all, one of the great American Masters of Photography. As a completely self-taught photographer, Duane Michals was among the first photographers to make innovative use of photo sequences, incorporating handwritten texts which add another dimension to the images’ meaning.
Blending photography and poetry to balance fragility and strength, gravity and humour, each sequence depicts the unfolding of a specific event.
Michals’ career has included shooting for Esquire, Vogue, Mademoiselle and he has been the official photographer for the 1968 Olympics and published over 30 books.
